NATIONAL PLAN OF VIETNAM FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE GLASGOW DECLARATION ON FORESTS AND LAND USAGE

On August 24, 2023, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang endorsed Decision No. 993/QD-TTg on the Nation Plan for the Implementation of the Glasgow Declaration on Forests and Land Use by 2023 (“Decision 993”).

National goals set out under Decision 993 are as follows:

– By 2025, Vietnam will stringently manage and maintain all existing natural forests, and minimize the change of natural forest use purposes or forest and land degradation.

– By 2030, Vietnam will completely address the problem of deforestation, forest resource degradation, land degradation, and desertification; develop sustainable agricultural and forestry production in association with agricultural and rural development, and contribute to the implementation of the pledge to nationally determined contributions (NDC).

– By 2025 the area of ​​natural forests that shall have been restored and improved in quality will reach 10%, and reach 20% by 2030. The plan also aims to improve the efficiency of biodiversity conservation and protection capacity; and improve productivity, economic efficiency, and sustainability of planted forests and agricultural crops. In addition, the forest area has been granted certificates of sustainable forest management will reach 0.5 million hectares by 2025, and 1.0 million hectares by 2030.
